Adobe and Webstandards

March 27, 2006

There's an article on Adobe/Macromedia's Developer's center about supporting Webstandards, exhorting us to develop with them. As far as I'm concerned they're preaching to the choir. However, I wonder if this means that the company will get behind Webstandards for their products. I'm looking at you ColdFusion.

Now, for the most part, it is very easy to write Webstandards based HTML/XHTML with ColdFusion. That is as long as you aren't using Flash Forms, or <cfchart>. Basically anything that embeds Flash uses the backward compatible Flash embedding, and <cfchart> even in .jpg or .png mode still creates image embedding code that isn't Webstandards compliant.

I understand the need to balance the ideal of Webstandards compliance against actually working with the browsers that people are actually using. But can't we have a boolean on those tags that embed content that developers can use to choose for themselves to support old browsers. Maybe we could even pass in a HTML/XHTML version to comply with.

Not that I don't love the work that the ColdFusion development team has done, but Adobe brought it up. And this isn't the first time I've said this: ColdFusion and Valid Code.

Alternative to CFLDAP

March 22, 2006

I've been working on a project that required line by line processing of 38,000 records. Each one of those lines required a ldap query. This eventually caused the LDAP calls to fail, as each <CFLDAP> call was incurring an unclosed connection, and the pool of the local server was being filled.

<CFLDAP> has no ability to manipulate the connection like you can with <CFFTP>. Therefore I needed to find a way of controlling the connection. Eventually I stumbled onto Dave Ross's site which had a lot of information about using JLDAP with ColdFusion.

Using the information there I built a CFC that uses JLDAP to manipulate ldap like <CFLDAP>. Hopefully, it can be of use to someone else out there.

The Dockenwamp is People!

dockandwamp

Approximately, one year ago I was introduced to the concept of the "Dockenwamp." I have to admit that even in my moments of relative peace, I still wondered "What is the Dockenwamp?" Thanks to Haplo, I got the answer.

However to fully understand, I have to explain the context of the "Dockenwamp." We saw it at the Orpheus Club, a Philadelphia institution whose purpose seems to be properly expressed in it's French motto: "Avocats, travestites, et soirees musicales." They have events where people need to suck up to two gentleman named "Doc" and "Wamp" (pictured.) Evidenlty, they have to suck up by singing a song that is suspciously similar to Queen's "Give me the Prize," featured on the soundtrack to the movie "Highlander." This leaves me to believe that the members have to behead each other to win the favor of the "Doc and Wamp."

The sad thing is that the picture, taken by Jeff Porten, came out blurry. That's not a shot at Jeff, I'm sure much like the Sasquatch, Yeti, and Chupacabra, the Dockenwamp does not photgraph well.

Funny Call Today

March 15, 2006

I got a call from the National Republican Congressional Committee today. It went pretty quick:

[Introduction omitted]

Him: Do you think that the future would be better if Democrats gained more control of Congress in this year's election. Or would there be no change?

Me: I think the future would be much better if we gained control.

Him: Okay, well then you have a nice day.

<CLICK>

I have to say he was very pleasant, even after I told him I would prefer that his bosses would all get fired.

Daily Show - Random Thought

Janice said pretty much all there was to say about our experience at the Daily Show taping, so I'll just say this: I respect and admire Jon Stewart, but I have non-sexual man-crush on Stephen Colbert.

Daily Show Taping

March 8, 2006

Barring the existence of a retraining order against me because of my hobo advice, I will be attending a taping of the Daily Show tomorrow.

I'm very excited. Janice arranged the whole thing. She's the bestest fiancee ever.

Guy in Front of Me at Billy Joel Concert

Guy in Front of Me at Billy Joel Concert

He was a 30 something wearing his Penn State cap backwards. That's not why he deserves it.

He gave Billy Joel both the devil fingers and the "Wayne's World" "We're not worthy" bow. That's not why he deserves it.

He anticipated, tensed up, stood up, blocked our view, and toasted every single reference to alcohol. That's not why he deserves it.

He turned to his friend and gave a look during "The Entertainer" that said "Dude, I really get this song in a way that you can't." And that is why he deserves a cockpunch.

Money Where my Mouth Is

March 3, 2006

Payday arrived, so I put money behind my political mouth, and dropped a donation to the Pennacchio campaign.

You don't have to give a lot to contribute, so if you have a mind to do something, but you don't want to work a phone bank or canvas, then drop a few bucks. It's pretty much the absolute least you can do, and they make it pretty easy.
