I got a chance to meet Albert "Dragonball" Yee tonight. He was kind enough to meet me after work so I could sign the petition to get Chuck Pennacchio listed on the ballot for the Democratic Primary. Thanks to Albert for being so generous with his time.
If you are interested in voting for an actual Democrat this May, then sign the petition so you'll get a chance to.
If you don't know who Pennacchio is check out his site, or read these highly persuasive entries from the aforementioned Dragonballyee.
If you think "But Casey's the only Democrat to vote for in Pennsylvania," read this and let me try and persuade you that it's not true.

Thanks to a lot of hits today, I was able to refine the Flex 2.0 version of the Wikipedia Showdown , fix a slew of bugs, and comment the source. The source is now available. Thank you to all who tried it and got an error, you showed me a lot (but not all) of what was wrong with it.

Inspired by Ben Forta's appearance at PACFUG, I decided to Flexify an application that I originally wrote as an experiment: the Wikipedia Showdown. It didn't take that long to write in Flex 2.0. Most of the time was spent fine tuning the position of of the elements and what not. Check it out, I should post the source in a day or so.
Wikipedia Showdown Flex 2.0.
Note: Make sure you have the Beta version of the Flash 8.5 Player otherwise it won't work.

I ran into an odd issue this week, and figured I share. I was getting errors when trying to access a CFC as a webservice from another machine. When I actually browsed to the url of the cfc with the wsdl switch I got an error message that the XML was malformed. I examined the source of the wsdl I found a bunch of whitespace.
This cfc actually exists on all of my ColdFusion servers (15) half of which were the same version and patch level, and one that was cloned two weeks ago from the same source as the server having a problem (also cloned two weeks ago.) I checked the copy on all of them and no error, and no whitespace. I checked the " Enable Whitespace Management" setting, which was enabled on all of the machines, and the malfunctioning server. So no joy.
I added <cfprocessingdirective supresswhitespace="TRUE">... Still no joy. Finally I added a <cfsilent> which did the trick. Very strange. Odd that it only effected one server.

I have two theories about the pictured playdough fruit:
- Fruit made from playdough rots because it looks like fruit.
- The salt is being leeched out and chrystalizing.
Either way, I fear it.

In possibly one of the more interesting intersections of my politics, my city, and my work; a new site appeared today, urging Philadelphians to come out and vote against Rick Santorum. Give it a look, it's a pretty noble cause, and it's powered by ColdFusion (and FuseBox).
Philadelphians Against Santorum, a campaign of PA PAC for Progress.

From time to time, I have problems consuming webservices via ColdFusion. Usually these problems have to do with changes in the webservice's code or configuration or corruption of the stub objects for the webservice on the calling ColdFusion server. To get around this: I wrap all foreign webservices calls in a <cftry> <cfcatch>; in the catch I reset the webservice; and retry the original webservice call.
To do this call the following code:
<cffunction access="private" name="reset_webservice" output="false" returntype="void" description="Reset the webservice in the Server Factory.">
<cfargument name="wsdl" type="string" required="yes" hint="The url of the the wsdl file of the webservice to reset." />
<cfobject type="JAVA" action="Create" name="factory" class="coldfusion.server.ServiceFactory" />
<cfset RpcService = factory.XmlRpcService />
<cfset RpcService.refreshWebService("#arguments.wsdl#") />
</cffunction>

My theory... There are two type of people in the world: 1. People who find Haplo to be the funniest person alive, and 2. People who should be shot in the face.
Enjoy: a most dangerous game.

I'm changing my vote for the Democratic primary for the US Senate in Pennsylvania. For those not familiar with the race, my options are: Bob Casey, conservative to moderate son of a former governor, pre-selected by the Democratic machinery to win the primary; and Chuck Pennacchio a true liberal and an underdog who has been shut out by most of the Democratic party in the area for the purpose of saving the fight for Santorum. Oh and there's a third guy, but I'm not really sure he's a real person.
For the longest time, I've been thinking I would probably vote for Casey in the primary. Why? Mostly because he's been touted as a Pro-Life Democrat who's good for labor. This to me equated to the opposite of the "fiscally conservative but morally liberal" DLC clowns that have been in the spot light of the Democratic party for the past 10 years. Also, I'm a Pro-Life Democrat, I'd like there to be more of them. Finally, common wisdom was "he was our only chance at beating Santorum."

There's one question that flitters through my head every time I see the Danish cartoon protesters: Where do they get the flags they burn?
Well Slate has the answer. They make them, or buy them at, I shit you not, the PLO Flag Shop.

I tried Chilly Philly Ice Cream tonight. I picked it up at Whole Foods. It's actually really good, but their flavors are limited for the time being. I would say that it's better than WaWa Ice Cream, but not as rich as a premium ice cream like Ben and Jerry's or Haagen Daaz. But at like $3.29 a pop, it's the lowest price ice cream at Whole Foods. It's kinda a cool that a percentage of the profits get donated to Philadelphia charities.
Try some if you see them in your supermarket. And while you're at it check out their website (circa 1996.)

I can't quite believe it, but I find #1 Single, riveting. If you haven't seen it, it's a dating reality show where Lisa Loeb is looking for a husband.
I've never particularly been a huge fan of Lisa Loeb, but for some reason this show is facinating. I think because it is in sharp relief to other celebrity reality shows. She's not pathetic, or obnoxious, she's actually pretty sweet. She's also really normal, or edited that way.
My favorite clip was the guy who sang "Stay" on karaoke to her.
I'm shocked that something this positive is on E.
