ColdFusion and Valid Code

November 30, 2005

I 've gotten oddly obsessive about webstandards and valid XHTML. The problem is that many of ColdFusion's features that make web development easy also make very unstandard xhtml. In order to get this site to validate I had to:

  • Replace Flash <cfform> tags with properly styled XHTML forms.
  • Remove all <cfdump> tags
  • Replace all embedded Flash with Flash embedding using the Satay Method.
  • Clean all Movable Type created content.

Finally when all was said and done, I have one page left that won't validate. It's a page on which I use <cfchart>. Nothing I've been able to do seems to fix that. I know there are plenty of people who don't think validation is vital but a large company like Macromedia should shoot for valid output.

Christmas-Time is Here

November 28, 2005

christmas_tree

Janice and I have started a tradition where we put up Christmas decorations as soon as Thanksgiving company leave. Even though this year we had a lot of fun hosting my cousin, his fiancee, and her sister, we had the tree waiting for us as a gift when they left.

Now onwards to Christmas!

Running Man Clock Update

November 23, 2005

Janice pointed out to me that with Arnold's defeat in the various proposition elections in California, that the Running Man Clock needed updating. After conferring with the committee of scientists who vote on Running Man Clock issues, we have decided to change the time to midnight.

It is now 10 minutes until midnight, where midnight is defined as creation of a real world Running Man show.

Last Call With Carson Daly

I find myself embarassed to say this, but not only do I occasionally watch Last Call, but it's growing on me.

I don't know if that makes me current or just really immature.

The Office Imitates Life

November 22, 2005

Every week, I watch The Office, and it seems like more and more of it is like my work. Granted we don't make paper, and Bob Z is no Michael Scott, but the similarities abound. Michael does improv - I did improv. Pam and Jim have a secret work place crush on each other. Janice and I kept ours secret for awhile. Michael forces employees to participate in an embarassing work party complete with award ceremony. Bob Z...

Nevermind.. there's nothing similar about The Office and my job.

If you actualy read this Bob, I'm just kidding.

Montecristo Churchill

Dan, Ryan and I once again made our way to Mahogany on Walnut to get our stogie on. Becky pointed out that it was the Great American Smokeout. We did the only responsible thing, we invited her. She declined.

I was in a mood to just have something I could enjoy. So I went with a brand I liked when I was younger.

Construction: As always, the established brands have quality under control, which is another way to say what I've been saying a lot, this cigar was well constructed. The burn was even, the ash white, and the draw good.

Taste: There was not a lot to be offended by here. It was mostly a tobacco taste, with some sort of undertones that I couldn't identify. It was really mild, to the point of weakness.

Stats: The cigar measures 7 inches by 48 ring guage. The cigar is completely Dominican except for the good old US of A Connecticut wrapper. Holt's sells it for $10 in the store. (The website quotes a lower price.)

Overall: I was really disappointed with this. It was constructed well, but bland. Add in the $10 I payed for it, and it really isn't a good value.

Hazing

Of late I find my thoughts turning to a form of ritualistic abuse steeped in tradition. A situation where more experienced people have power over those with less experience or knowledge. I think often people haze those they have power over because they went through it themselves so they will make other suffer.

I am talking about marriage, of course.

It seems like everybody involved with the process seems to be out to make it difficult for us. The Church is making Janice get confirmed, despite the fact that I'm pretty sure it's not sacramentally required. They wouldn't even discuss it with us. Wedding vendors love to use F.U.D. on us. My family is causing me issues over the invitations. That's right, I've lost precious hours of my life to multiple, lengthy family conferences over FUCKING INVITATIONS! People that were months ago repeatedly pressuring me to propose, and cajoling me fore taking my time are now asking me if I've really thought this thing through.

In the next few months, I have more fights ahead of me, over shit I don't care about. I get to have the Catholic Church teach me (again) about the Rhythm Method er... Natural Family Planning. I'm sure my family will be angered by the centerpieces, or a food choice or something.

I know everyone go through this, and I don't have a larger point here, I just wanted to vent... And of course to point out that Janice is worth it. But eloping sounds better every day.

Yet Another New Design

November 19, 2005

As you may, or may not have been able to see, this site has been redesigned. Nothing big, I just got bored of the old look.

I've removed Sifr. Not because of a problem with the technology, just because I didn't need it.

Explore. Enjoy. If anything looks wrong (or I didn't format for your browser) drop me a line.

Not Dead

November 17, 2005

Haven't posted in awhile, I know. I've been busy. Finally hiring someone, but I got set back by jury duty last week. I'm only now getting some breathing room. I'm also working on a redesign of this site and another Christmas movie (to join "It's a Wonderful Mensch" and "A Christmas Party") . This is all in addition to writing at Filmfodder. So I've been a bit run down.

Expect to see the redesign within a week or two, and the Christmas movie in about a month. Also expect a new cigar review within a day or so - because it's alternative happy hour Thursday again.

I don't know if this ad does justice to the horror that the Meow Mix Cat Clock is. But those of you that don't watch late night TV won't ever know the horror any other way.

La Aroma de Cuba Double Corona

November 6, 2005

It's been awhile since I last had a cigar. I was out in LA for a week, then sick for a week. Finally, though, Dan, Ryan and I were able to slip to have alternative happy hour. I was excited about trying this brand, as I've never tried it before ever.

Construction: This cigar burned evenly with great oily feel. The draw was a little loose, maybe close to a little too loose, but still acceptable. It never needed to be relit. In short, it's the good construction that has become predictable these days.

Taste: The cigar tasted mostly of tobacco. It was full bodied. It wasn't an offensive taste, but it didn't stand out to me either.

Stats: This cigar measures 7.5 inches by a ring gauge of 52. They're constructed of mostly Honduran tobacco, with a little Nicaraguan filler thrown in. Holt's sells these for $5.10 a pop.

Overall: For the most part it was an well constructed but bland tasting cigar. However at $5.10 for a Double Corona, I can get my flavor from glass of Scotch. I definitely recommend this to be tried.

Pumpkin Ice Cream

pumpicecream

Two years ago I discovered Pumpkin Ice Cream at Trader Joes. Since then I have repeatedly stopped in at Trader Joes around this time of year, hoping beyond hope that they would have it. Finally my stalking has paid off. Behold!

I've hoarded a small supply of it, but I will be back. Get some while it lasts, it doesn't stay in the freezer very long. Mostly 'cause I hoard it.
