Aarrgghh!!

What is Epicaricacy?

n. Taking joy in the misery of others. It is the English equivalent of Schadenfreude.

OR

The feeling I have at the news that Tom Delay is being indicted.

Epicaricacy is a great word. Why do we use a German word when we have such a great English one that means exactly the same?! I say we should start a campaign to start using epicaricacy instead.

I love the word Schadenfreude, but now that I know we have a perfectly cogent English definition, I'll use it. BTW, I cannot find epicaricacy in any online dictionaries. Help!

I think that we are happy to use both the German schadenfreude and the Greek epicaricacy just demonstrates the diversity of English. I don't see why we should favour one over the other.

If you want a dictionary of rare English words then definitely check out the Luciferous Logolepsy (not a religious cult) which is a great online dictionary that defines exceptionally rare words including epicaricacy and schizothemia.
