My First Opening Credits

November 28, 2004

I'm putting together Craig's Variety Show, and hopefully I'll post more information about it soon. But I got to design my first set of opening titles meant for TV. I'm thinking it looks pretty good. Any thoughts?

By the way, the music is an original composition by Michael Worth.

I've posted the video in the extended version of this entry.

November 23, 2004

I'm a sucker for it, I guess. I just got off my cellphone with my parents. They are in Paris. They were calling me from the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral. Half a world away, six times zones away, and yet somehow my parents could still check in with me... That's just cool.

myscore

I found a pretty cool site that allows you to take a quiz on what you believe, then it will show you where you are on both a social and economical level.

The Political Compass

I discovered that I'm a wee bit more lefty than I thought I was. To put in in perspective, I'm slightly to the social left of Nelson Mandela. Hell, it even puts me to the left of Cobb and Nader.

It's lonely out here in bleeding-heartland.

ColdFusion Blackstone Coolness

November 19, 2004

So I've been testing Macromedia's next version of Cold Fusion, named: Blackstone. I was writing a component, and used the self-doccumenting feature of cfc's to create a little documentation. However when I went to print it, it came out all crappy. For some reason these things never print right.

Living in Pottersville

It's a Wonderful Life is number two on my all time list of movies. Over the past few years it has started to mean more and more to me. At first I thought it was because it's really solid script in terms of reincorporation and character growth. Many people think it's hokey, or it doesn't hold up in the modern, cynical world. I can't speak to that, it's Capra, and like people breaking in to song in the middle of a musical, you either accept certain aspects of the movie or you don't. I do. But I don't think that is the real reason I love this movie so much.

Philadelphia's Most Influential Blogger, Scott McNulty posted an article about Amending the Constitution for Arnold to become the Presinator. Inspired by the absurdity of changing the Constituion for one person, because he happens to share your politics, I thought of the reciprical liberal candidate. I'm a raging liberal, and I'm horrified by the posibility of Bono running for President.

Disturbingly, I am not the first person to offer this up as satire, although my logo is better.

Odd New Law Coming Down the Pike

November 16, 2004

From a new article at Wired.

Congress wants to pass a copyright law that among other things, basically gives Hollywood a lot more clout over what is and is not fair use. But the law seemingly has a lot of odd sorts of qualifiers:

The bill would also permit people to use technology to skip objectionable content -- like a gory or sexually explicit scene -- in films, a right that consumers already have. However, under the proposed law, skipping any commercials or promotional announcements would be prohibited.

So let me get this straight, we can use technology to skip curse words, love scenes, and fire-fights, but we cannot use it to skip advertisements. What if I'm offended by the Coors twins commercial, or a 527 ad or consumerism in general. Which rule trumps?

Absurdities aside, I don't know how I feel about this. On one hand, as a producer of a small amount of content I would like to make money off of it, some day. However, I know as well as anyone else that the "You're stealing from the artist" argument is patently false. Everyone knows that distributors have already robbed the artist, they are the ones making money off of any content, and they are who this law really protects. I also know that by using say... pirated software I grew to prefer that software, and when the opportunity arose I purchased it. So I think with the cost of content creation poised to go lower and lower, and the free distribution of content becoming easier and easier, these sorts of laws favoring the distribution industry is protectionism, which for the most part I'm in favor of. However, the industry makes absurd profits at the expense of the artists and the consumers, so maybe it is time for the distribution industry to receive a mortal wound.

So I guess I'm against this law. But I might need further thought on this one.

Cool, but Weird Kennedy Documentary

November 15, 2004

So I'm watching the Discovery Channel at this exact moment. Currently on, a Show entitled Kennedy III - Magic Bullet which tries to explain how one bullet could have caused the Kennedy assassination without resorting to the Magic Bullet theory.

I don't know about all that. But the whole show is them shooting bullets into giant blocks of medical gelatin that simulates human tissue. After they shoot it, they play it back in slow motion. They also made "artificial torsos."

Memorable quote:

Wesley made sure to include a complete neck on the JFK torso, so he could accurately triangulate the position on the entry wound. Now it is time to bring in the anatomical surrogates. First the torso representing JFK...

Wow.

The CDC Monitors My Bathroom

November 12, 2004

cdc

Mysteriously at work, these weird signs popped up on our bathroom. They are Center for Disease Control signs basically promoting proper handwashing. For some reason I got it into my head to slip in a sign of my own. For the record, I don't think the CDC is "Big Brother" I just have a weird sense of humor. I'd feel really guilty mocking a government institution except for the fact that I'm 90% sure that these signs going up is related to flu vaccine shortages.

So far only two people have noticed it.

Christmas Craptacular

November 11, 2004

I saw a preview for a TV musical version of The Christmas Carol that's new this year. I looks like one of those movies where they load up with celebrities and leave behind the quality.

Cons: Kelsey Grammer, Jason Alexander, musical
Pros: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jesse L. Martin, Charles Dickens

I'll probably watch it anyway, cause I'm a sucker for Christmas movies.

Election 2004

Well it looks like Ohio is the new Florida.

I don't think it over yet. I also don't think the Kerry Campaign will roll over as easily as Gore's did. I think he's a fighter and we now know the the cost of rolling over.

So my prediction failures were:
Wisconsin, which as of now is leaning Kerry.
Florida, which I'm still not convinced we lost.

Which leaves:
Ohio, which could still go for Kerry, considering that people were still voting, and it had about 200,000 provisional ballots.

On the solidly good news front. Allyson Schwartz won.

More Robocalls

November 2, 2004

In from Janice - seven more calls today and yesterday.

In no particular order:
  • The local republican office (sorry! I’m cured now, remember?!)
  • Some lady on behalf of George W Bush
  • Arnold Schwartzenneger
  • Mary J Blige
  • Sean “P Diddy” Combs (vote or die! – is that a death threat?)
  • The Pennsylvania Democratic Party

We also got a nice hang tag thingy that I think was from a Kerry person – I didn’t look at it, since I had already voted. The house two doors down had a “Don’t ring – we voted already” sign on the gate, so I presume there were walkers around, too.

Update

  • Make that 7. Americans Coming Together, with a mere 20 minutes left before the polls close.

So I'm watching local TV here in Louisianna and a commercial came on decrying a candidate over his support of cockfighting. It had graphic images of cocks fighting and descriptions of the process of raising a cock to fight.

I thought it was some sort of satire.

No, no it isn't.

Chris John Supports Extreme Animal Cruelty

Wow. If nothing else, I am glad to be down in the bayou. All I need to see now is one of those fan boats, and this will be the happiest trip of my life.

The Intersection of Stupid and Evil

I've been someone who very strongly opposes the view and beliefs of the other side in this election. I've been careful not to demonize. Thankfully I don't have to. They do it to themselves.

Down in Florida two Republican protesters disguised themselves as Democrats, in the hopes of misrepresenting Kerry's view on gay marriage.

Be sure to check out the pictures. I really like the all-denim and cat-ears look on the female protester.
