Aarrgghh!!

Too Many Nice Guys

Summary

Too Many Nice Guys is set in Philadelphia, in the present day and it revolves around the friendship of Han, Matt, and Neil; three men in their late twenties and early thirties. Also playing a major role is Matt’s wife, Laurie. Neil has recently been fired from his high paying job, and moved out of the house he bought with his fiancée when he caught her with another man. He moved in with Matt and Laurie; additionally Han lives nearby, so most of the show occurs in the house the three share.

Concepts

The underlying theme of the show is the evolution of the "nice guy" in his 20's. The three male characters represent the "nice guy" in three different stages: right out of college; married; and somewhere in between. It shows how the problems and solutions of men change over time.

I tried my best to write characters who are specific, but broad. In this I looked at Cheers, Seinfeld, and Friends as the guide. The characters started out very broad, and only later became the tight easily defined characters.

Also important to me was the role of the one female character. I wanted to avoid writing a stereotypical sitcom woman. Laurie doesn't nag, harp, or try to change her mate. I modeled this relationship on Titus, a sitcom from the late 90's.

Main Characters

Neil is in his late twenties, fair haired, and light skinned. He’s smart, capable, responsible, but his life has taken a turn for the worse, with being laid off and dumped in a relatively short time span.

Laurie is in her late twenties, and is incredibly cute. She’s the woman we want our friends to marry- low maintenance, cool, and more than a little bit smarter than us.

Matt is just past thirty, dark and handsome. Matt is one of those guys that people think isn’t that bright at first glance, but every once in a while you get a flash that there is more going on in his head than he’s willing to share with you.

Han is in his mid twenties, and Asian. Han is younger than the other two guys, and hasn’t been out of college for as long as them; consequently he has a little more evolving to do.

The Pilot

The Pilot revolves around Neil’s first attempt to date since his traumatic life change. He meets Nicole at a young professionals mixer, and she seems normal enough, but as he starts dating her, she reveals pretty quickly that she’s either insane or a racist. While this is going on, Laurie is trying to force Matt to pick dining room chairs, while Han has run out of money for the entire month with more than three weeks to go until payday.

Guest Character

Nicole is in her late twenties and very attractive. Nicole is insane, not in a scary way, but we definitely wouldn’t want to bring her home to meet... pretty much anyone.
