I'm in thank-you note hell

I've recently taken a new interest in doing things around the house - staining and painting mismatched furniture, organizing cabinets, and fixing things. I've realized that this is because I don't want to write thank you notes.

I'm only 17% done. This could take forever.

I don't want to go!

So here I am, a little after 4pm on Wednesday. In a little while, I'll get in the car and drive to Delaware for skating. I won't be home until 11pm. It's cold and raining. I don't want to go!

I've had this feeling over the past few years - it's tough having a hobby where you have to drive an hour each way to take part in it. Especially if you don't particularly like driving. Somehow, it seems to rain more on Wednesdays than other days of the week (though when I skated on Mondays, that's when it rained). Worse than driving is driving in the rain. The only accidents I've had driving have been the result of rain - one where I spun out on slick roads, another where I drove into a flood during a terrible downpour. So as you might expect, I have some trepidation related to rainy driving trips.

And then there's the alternate status. I skate one of two spots on team that I share with 4 other people. The coaches pick the best person for each spot around the time of each competition. That means the entire season is a competition to get the spot right, get equal time, and be the best out of the sharing group.

So at what point does the fun of skating with a group and competing and hopefully winning medals lose out to my hate of the travel, late nights, and stress of it all? I feel like it might be soon...but giving up is hard to do.

Since When?

According to the quiz I just took, I have a Philly accent.

I know after 5 years in Delaware, my mom said my speech had gotten more Southern. But since she's spent her entire life on Long Island, I didn't think about it much. I thought I'd just hidden that last bit of NY that got me made fun of when I started college.

Is it true?
